Learning to be a better speaker

It’s about time

When the Universe speaks, I always listen. It’s been telling me for some time that I need to be speaking – professionally. Equally excited and terrified about this prospect, I knew I needed to get some help. So I attended Brad Burton’s Be A Better Speaker day.

Driving lessons

I learned to drive when I was 16. We had lessons at school just like we had maths and English and P.E. One morning, as I was getting ready for school, it was pouring with rain. I figured the driving lessons would be cancelled.

It was dangerous, hard to see and the roads were slippery. No one would take a learner out in that mess, right?

Silly me! Of course we were having our lesson. Of course we needed to learn how to drive in the pouring rain. What was I thinking?

In at the deep end

Move forward 35 years. I decide to attend Brad Burton’s Be A Better Speaker Day. I’ve facilitated workshops for years, and having dipped my toes into speaking recently, knew it was a little bit different to facilitating. I wanted to learn more and hone my skills.

So off I go to Farnborough, having prepared my homework and feeling fairly confident I can deliver that piece with ease.

However on the morning, it became clear that I really needed to offer something that I hadn’t prepared. I was being asked to deliver something off the cuff – and be good at it! Suddenly I realised that we were going to be driving in the rain all day!

We were asked to deliver several off the cuff pieces throughout the day. As terrifying as it felt in the moment, I also absolutely loved it!

Stepping Up

Fortunately I’ve ‘died on my arse’, as Brad says, enough times to just get up there and do it. Yes, I might screw it all up, look like an idiot, get stuck or a million and one other scary things, but so what?

If I want to help people step into their full power, into who-they-really-are, then I have to do the same.

Being thrown in at the deep end, on a day of learning how to be a better speaker, was a perfect way to do that.

If you want to be a better speaker I highly highly recommend you do Brad’s day. I’m so glad I did.
